I read a lot of crime fiction, and I think one of the best writers of crime fiction is Robert Barnard. There isn't ever a formula. This one is a very very different crime novel which you can read again and again. It begins with a boy evacuated from London to the countryside who finds himself a new family. So where is the crime? Now that would be telling.

Sad, moving, and altogether satisfying. The narrative style is interestingly weird. Not an easy read, but rewarding. Some people here say it is classified as 'Young Adult' -- I wasn't aware of this. Seems a very grown up book indeed to me, but a bright 14 year old could read any adult book.

I read this on a long distance flight. I liked a lot about it. Well-written, interesting characters, great setting. I thought, though, that making modern medicine so harmful was a bit of a travesty. A more subtle opposition of the modern and the old would have been more interesting, I think.

The letters are edited by Vivien Jones. Austen is funny, gossipy, and sly. Well worth reading.

I read this in 1975. At that point I had read no George Eliot at all!!!!!!!! It bowled me over. I went on to read all the rest.....

Even though it did bowl me over, it probably really is a bit longer than it need be.

This was always one of my favorites as a child and I still enjoy it (and the sequels, though they are not by Johanna Spyri). It engages with what constitutes good treatment of children.
