This book was really not very impressive. The author had an annoying tendency to wonder--like he would be talking about a meeting with his boss and then go off on a tangent about meeting Hemingway and then try to go back to meeting with his boss. If this is really how he thinks/acts on a daily basis I don't know how he gets anything done.

But more then that, I really was not that impressed with the story. Was his change that much different from anyone else who changes jobs? I don't think so. If Starbucks was not in the title then I don't think that it would have even got published. And I don't think that his story is that unique except he had farther to fall when he was fired. Does that make it that much more noteworthy?
I was kind of afraid that this book would be sad and depressing, but at the end of the book I felt inspired and uplifted. He works really hard on my focusing on the negative and sad in his life--and it makes this reading very enjoyable.

This book was very hard for me to rate using just 5 stars. The story itself is amazing and inspirational--if you read it you will find yourself wanting to help to support the Greg Mortenson's cause. But the writing was very bad and made the book unnecessarily cumbersome to get through. I am not sure why the author insisted on calling Greg Mortenson by his last name, but it felt unnaatural. And the author had an annoying tendency to drop in tidbits of information without really tying the information to the story. It reminded me a person who likes to name drop for no other reason then to show what/who they know.

After reading this book I was all set to start a self-watering container garden--as soon as possible. Then I really started to investigate the prices on these particular types of containers, and it can get pretty step. So I was a little dishearted. I have researched on the internet and found some guides to making self-watering containers, but unfortunately many of them are not very pretty to look at (they involve 5 gallon buckets or large Rubbermaid style containers). So I am a little torn on what to do. I may still start a self-watering container garden--but more slowly then originally planned. Buying pots here and there. In the book, he does show on one page how to turn a regular pot into a self-watering pot by using a ready made insert, but I have not been able to find these inserts yet. So if they are cheaper that might be a option as well.
I have just started the process of learning more about gardening--vegetable gardening in particular. This book was wonderful for me. They give you ideas for questions to ask yourself as you go through the steps of planning a good container garden. My one problem is that I live in Arizona which makes general books like this to follow to the letter--our summers are not like the ones typically discussed in this book. So I am still looking for information about vegetable gardening in Arizona in particular. But for what I needed--general information about vegetable gardening in containers--this book was spot on.
