I think this is one of those "you can't go back again" things. I loved these books as a kid, but reading this one again it's just a little too light on detail and juice. We read "The Bear" in college and looking back it is somewhat ridiculous to try and read that story without the rest of the novel. A pair of early works from Delany... both full of amazing ideas and tight, economical prose. I like both of them, and I made the right decision in reading both this time, as they inform one another. I do feel that the stories are both a bit... glib?
