A peculiar dandy-romatic novel set in 1830s Caucasus, at that time the Russian frontier. Lots of society angst, ennui and, of course, a duel. The word "dandy" is used several times. Excellent descriptions of men's furnishings and the manners and mores of the time and place.

Two thumbs up.

Call him Baron von Crazy Pants. Baron Nikolai Maximilian von Ungern-Sternberg (1885–1921) was a Czarist leader in Siberia and Mongolia during the Bolshevik revolution. A fascinating but cruel character, he cut a path of violence, pillage, torture and mayhem across this forgotten region's history.

He was an Estonian nobleman of German descent and servant of the Russian Empire, and a descendant of Baltic pirates (one of his ancestors lit false beacons on the family island north of Estonia to lure in ships, kill their crews and steal their cargo) who opted for a military career in the Czar's cavalry. In this he floundered until the revolution, when he saw his opportunity to become the warrior-hero he always imagined himself to be.

In the Transbaikal and later in Mongolia, he set about carving out a kingdom of his own. Wildly antisemitic, he went about killing just about everyone who he thought opposed him, especially Jews and, for a short time, became the de facto ruler of Mongolia.

This is one of those off-the-wall histories of forgotten peoples and places, of madness and megalomania that takes you into forgotten realms and terrifying places. Along the way you learn all kinds of histories and not-so-fun facts -- like the fact that the swastika, at once an ancient Buddhist and Teutonic rune, had become an antisemitic symbol long before the Nazis ever adopted it. It's a fascinating, chilling read.

I just picked up my friend from Southern California, Charles Coloumbe's, new book, "The Pope's Legion: The Multinational Fighting Force that Defended the Vatican." It's about the all-but-forgotten history of a war that raged for a decade in the 19th century on the Italian peninsula before unification and the Zouave (look it up) soldiers who defended the Pope. It's not for everyone: Chas. is a Catholic writer (he writes often for the Vatican press and is a Knight Commander of the Order of St. Sebastian) and tends to write pretty glowingly about the Church and its officials, which some might not appreciate. But it's a good bit of history heretofore unknown to me, and it includes a colorful cast of adventurers. Military and religious history buffs will enjoy it and learn quite a lot about religious politics and military affairs in Europe in the mid-19th century. It is very well written and concise; Chas. wastes few words and the ones he employs always manage to hit the right tone.

Well that settles that. I've always wanted to explore, to follow in the footsteps of the greats -- Humboldt, Fremont, Burton, Stanley, Livingstone, et al -- but I am never, EVER going to the Amazon. If explorer Capt. Percy Harrison Fawcett's experiences -- and eventual death -- on the Amazon are any yardstick, the Amazon sucks and sucks wild. Fish that swim up your urethra and have to be sliced out; chiggers that worry your iris like a thousand unwelcome, spiky contact lenses; 50-foot snakes; swarms of malaria-laden 'skeeters; endless muck and mud and trench rot and hunger and disease. No thank you.

I'll cross mighty deserts, explore the Tundra and the Taiga, risk the Arctic and the Antarctic, search in vain via kayak for the Northwest Passage, and brave the forest wild. But I will NOT suffer slow dessication at the mandibles of poisonous tics.

That said, "The Lost City of Z" is one of the best books of this kind of adventure I've ever read. Though now all but forgotten, at the time of his disappearance in 1925, Fawcett was one of the most famous explorer-adventurers of his day. A bit of a crackpot, the Royal Geographical Society explorer was convinced that a great civilization -- whose capital he called, simply, "Z" -- existed deep in the Amazon jungle. He went looking for it, along with his would-be movie star son, and was never seen again. Rescue missions were mounted, some of which also never returned. The author, David Grann, cleverly weaves his own obsession with Fawcett into Fawcett's -- and his followers' -- obsession with finding the City of Z. The result is at times riveting.

"The Lost City of Z" is right up there with "The Rescue Season," which if you have not read, you should.

Kneale expertly weaves together narratives from Tasmanian natives, English explorers, colonists & convicts, and Manx smugglers in a rich tapestry (cliche, I know, but apt nevertheless). English Passengers is two parts rip-snorting, Flashman-style adventure tale combined with one part historical lament over the sad fate of a conquered people, all told through letters and eye-witness accounts.

Swell book. You should read it.

    			  H. Rider Haggard's classic, rip-snorting tale of high adventure in Southern Africa, in which big game hunter, Allen Quartermain, searches for the lost treasure of King Solomon. This proto-Indiana Jones tale, first published in 1898, delights with its late Victorian sensibilities and politically incorrect (by today's standards) language and prejudices.

Jack London's classic memoir, John Barleycorn, details the California author's lifelong relationship with alcohol and its effects on his short yet eventful life. In the process, London takes us through his young life as a mill worker, an oyster pirate, a maritime seal hunter, a student, and a writer. One of the best books I have ever read.
Jack London's epic "The Sea Wolf" is the story of Humphrey van Weyden, an effete young gent forced to become tough and self-reliant by being exposed to the deprivation of a life at sea. Kind of a socialist "Admirable Crichton," if you will. Its depiction of a life at sea at the turn of the last century are at times breathtaking.
