After several chapters in, I quit reading the book. I was a bit put off by the fact that this book is really Pride and Prejudice, with some zombie fighting scenes thrown in during random scenes, and some characterization and dialog thrown in to support the inclusion of the walking dead.

You see, I love the original. It is one of my all time favorites. I figure teens will love P&P on it's own, without walking corpses. What teen wouldn't love a story with the social pressures of alienation and classism that ring true, even today, in American high schools. Also, the romantic, sexual tension just pours off the page. I have yet to meet a teen, that doesn't pick up on relationship angst in literature. So, I figured this book was really just a money making ploy from the publisher. They give it a humorous title, and some gory cover art to get kids to buy the book. However, I felt my students would read one or two chapters and drop it, forever missing and the enjoyment of reading the classic P&P.

I brought this up with my teen readers advisory club last week, and I have to admit that I was wrong. Overwhelmingly, the students who picked up this book at our Scholastic Book Fair, read it, and finished it. I heard comments like "I would have never read the original if it wasn't for this version," and "The zombie parts were awesome."
