11-year old Reuben Land lays witness to some life-altering events, including God-given miracles. Well, on the one hand, the story was very engrossing- I always wanted to find out what would happen next. And some of the observations on faith and life and such rang very true. On the other hand, I was pretty severely disappointed with the ending- not so much the ending itself, but the way it felt rushed, and sort of unresolved....less

After his mother dies, 17-year-old Jeremy must find his Uncle Aiden, who has been estranged from the family for years. Checked this one out after reading the favorable review on Discerning Reader. It is very good- eminently readable, thoughtful little book, with some good symbolism. Has a good message without getting too preachy. I was kind of sad to be done with it, which should tell you something....less

A teen girl deals with an abusive mother. This book is really predictable. Also, I felt like the author was trying too hard to be Relevant, like when the main character seemed to be flirting with an eating disorder for ~three pages, and then it was never brought up again. Mediocre book, soon to be a bad movie (c.f. the sticker on the front)....less

Letters from a demonic (literally) supervisor to his charge concerning the temptation of one Jordan Fletcher. I went into this book a bit wary-- figuring it would be a poor imitation of The Screwtape Letters. However, I found this book worthy in its own right. It is thought-provoking and even convicting. Yes, Alcorn uses the same basic format as Screwtape, and even alludes to it and utilizes some of the same plot points. But Alcorn proves to be a worthy successor to Lewis in using the letters-from-a-demon device. He also adds to it by offering scenes from the temptee's life to go along with the letters. The one nitpick I have is that the book could have used a better copy editor: More than once, the last line from one section would be placed in the opening section of another. Awesome book, highly recommended....less

Meet Jaiden Beale, the first child to be raised by a corporation, now a teenager. Alternate summary: Corporations are eeeeevil. Another readable book without a whole lot of depth. The plot is pretty standard Evil Giant Corporation thing, with a bit of a twist because the protagonist is being raised by said EGC. I wonder if the author is not-so-secretly hoping to get this one made into a movie, because some of the scenes definitely feel like an action flick. Especially the climax. The denouement is a little too long, and a bit dumb. If you're looking for a good beach book, this might be one....less

"Meg has an unstable, complicated life with only one bedrock: her correspondence with Jennifer Aniston. This book is a pretty fast read. However, the characters are two-dimensional, and the ending seems a bit trite.

Non-fiction, mostly centered on the lives of Lewis and Williams. I basically checked out this book because I wanted to know where the Inklings hung out in Oxford, since I am visiting Oxford this summer. (Answer: A lot of places, one of the main ones was the Eagle and Child pub). I ended up skimming a huge chunk in the middle that centered on Williams, whom I have to say I have never heard of (and therefore don't really care about). Plus, I am a bit dubious at some of the author's interpretation of Lewis's motives. So, I don't really recommend this one....less

Admittedly, I don't always agree with Lewis's theology (for example, Lewis doesn't think much of pacifists, and I am one), but for the most part, this book is amazing. Very convicting. Logical answers to common doubts about Christianity; also, the foundational beliefs of the faith. This book has received some nice reviews, and with good reason. Keller handily utilizes logic, as well as great quotations from both believers (C.S. Lewis, Flannery O'Connor), and skeptics (Stephen Jay Gould) to answer the most common doubts people have about the truth of Christianity. Plus you've got to love a guy who starts out his book on apologetics with a quote from Star Wars. Recommended for skeptics and believers alike. I now want to own this book....less
