I was not a fan of this book. Although well-researched (as evidenced by its extensive bibliography), its characters lacked depth - they were seemingly just created to explore topics of interest to the author, including lesbianism, prisons, adultery and abortion during and after World War II. Sadly, although the book was a character/issue study with little plot, I never got particularly attached to the characters. The back of the book certainly made it sound more exciting than it turned out to be....less
