I just finished a book which is not on this list, Michael Crummey's The Wreckage, which I really enjoyed - that was for book club, tonight.

Will be returning to the list now - have some travel coming up, back home for Christmas, and some days off of course, so am hoping to read at least a few more before the end of the year, although I won't finish it all. Bringing 4 books from the list home with me: The Child in Time (I love McEwan); DogFellow's Ghost (written by a friend of a friend!); The Sandcastle (Murdoch is another favourite); and The Bone People (I visited New Zealand a couple of years ago and am looking forward to seeing it again in this book...)

I really enjoyed this. I loved the setting and the language - it felt very true to the Newfoundland I have experienced, without being over the top and exaggerated, which I have encountered a few times. The characters were complex, interesting, and Crummy does an excellent job of making the reader understand things that even the character himself or herself can't quite articulate - the tragedy of how isolated we always are.

Overall, I was quite disappointed with this book, and with the series. The middle part of this book, in particular, was completely incoherent as far as I'm concerned. It was only redeemed by the last third, where Crowly went back to the characters and at least provided some resolution of the story. I've been stuck trying to read Endless Things for the last month. It's the last book in a series, and kinda disappointing - I just could not get into it, and life was getting in the way and not helping.

This is my least favourite of the series so far - meandering, slow, kind of pointless, no movement until the very end. Meh.

It probably didn't help that my life was busy while I was trying to read this so I was reading it fairly slowly - it might have been better if I could have devoted myself to it for the better part of a day - but even allowing for that, it still felt like mostly filler.

I am going to move on straight to the fourth book in hopes that it will pick up the pace - it's shorter, at least.
