Levin's ability to blend half-truths with emotionally explosive language puts him in an exclusive class of powerful voices in American politics. His desire to establish a voice for those unwilling and uninterested in making their own informed decisions panders to the sound-bite mentality of the American public, thus rendering his arguments both plausible and rational to many. Unfortunately, Levin ignores the societal complexities that have developed in America (naturally and as a result of over 200 years of policy decisions) and fails to provide any reasonable or actionable suggestions for moving away from the status quo. Simply to insist on a return to the intents of the Founding Fathers is, unfortunately, to not fully appreciate the societal, political and economic transformations that have been built over the past two centuries. What results is a weak attempt to pander to the right-wing masses who understand little of public policy, American history, globalization and mass media. A great, insightful read for anyone looking to learn more about the religious history surrounding the so-called "War on Terror." Although I have just started reading this (approximately 70 pages into it), this is a wonderful description of the War on Terror from a journalist who has been at the ground level on all fronts of the conflict. From interactions with Taliban and Northern Alliance fighters in Afghanistan to Ground Zero in New York to the streets of Fallujah with U.S. Marines, Filkins captivates with his descriptions of the human element of this struggle on all sides. Fascinating read!
