Truly awful - I thought it might be interesting since it's set in WV, but the plot is nonsensical, the writing is tortured, especially the dialogue, and the characters are caricatures. It is also oddly full of a spurious religiosity and blatant sexis ...more

A small volume, oddly fascinating. Perec's memories of his childhood in France during WWII are fragmented and embellished; his parallel story of a mysterious island where an Olympiad-inspired sports ideal rules all of life is strange, original and ve ...more

Okay; I read it. Despite the appealing description, I found this one less than compelling - not sure why - just couldn't accept that the characters depicted in the first chapter could become the ones depicted later. I also found the main character's ...more

A fun read - struggling lawyer, back from nowhere, gets big scary case. Nasty clients, evil judges, and lurid settings. Harry Bosch is here, but in a minor role. This is mostly about the guy in The Lincoln Lawyer, my favorite. (Lincoln refers to the ...more

Got this when Karen and I went to London. As riveting a gothic tale as any I read in my teens except that this one is beautifully written. Could not put it down.

A wonderful book, riveting even, with exceptional characterizations... All good until the secret is revealed: I expected something more original from this author.
But that's near the end, so read it anyway!

Second time around for this one. I remembered it was a great story, but none of the details, so I listened to it - from Audible - cool to hear it after reading it. Now I'm ready for the sequel, but not quite yet.

Sad to say, 2 months after finishing this book, I can no longer distinguish it from The Pillars of the Earth, except to say it was fun and interesting to listen to... great period detail; good "yarn" as my dad used to say.
