Delightful little book. It reminded me of The Phantom Tollbooth, except it was more sarcastic (which I liked).
Mrs N is on page 47 of 308 of Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians: This is the sort of book I would have been quite fond of at age 12. It's charming!

The setting and time didn't work at all. The main character Truly is a baby boomer in upstate NY, yet she uses the word icebox regularly, despite a great deal of the book being set in the late 80s and early 90s. Baker throws in a few ...more

" I loved the idea of a story written from the perspective of a giant, but this one doesn't delve into her emotional character development the way I would have liked and some of the other characters are distractingly odd. The book's more about... I gue... "

Great book about recent scientific studies on children & teens. I have already put some of these ideas to work, with immediate results!* I recommend this book to anyone who spends time with children or teens.

" A great way to start out 2012 - I read the Book of Mormon in two weeks (beating my previous record of 19 days). Not easy but definitely worth it! "

" *This is my review of the entire trilogy, and there are some minor spoilers*

I'm a sucker for a good muli-pantheon tale. I think Sandman did it best, but Gaiman's reprisal with American Gods was also good. Thus I was excited to check out t... "

“Happiness had never been like this before. Now it came like sun showers, the sun and the rain together. Happiness was happier than it had been - sharp, piercing, and snatched, like a breath while swimming in surf.”
Elizabeth Knox, Dreamhunter

Oscar Wilde
“I can resist anything except temptation.”
Oscar Wilde, Lady Windermere's Fan

J.R.R. Tolkien
“Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisioned by the enemy, don't we consider it his duty to escape?. . .If we value the freedom of mind and soul, if we're partisans of liberty, then it's our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can!”
J.R.R. Tolkien

Franz Kafka
“A book must be the axe for the frozen sea within us.”
Franz Kafka

Diane Setterfield
“All morning I struggled with the sensation of stray wisps of one world seeping through the cracks of another. Do you know the feeling when you start reading a new book before the membrane of the last one has had time to close behind you? You leave the previous book with ideas and themes -- characters even -- caught in the fibers of your clothes, and when you open the new book, they are still with you.”
Diane Setterfield, The Thirteenth Tale
