An excellent character sketch of an entire community. Perry does a great job of portraying this small town in which he lives and the people and community that exist there. It definitely appealed to me also as I know that region quite well, and like it..

Written from a firefighter/EMT perspective, it sometimes goes into stereotypical jokes/rantings/EMT textbook lingo of the EMT realm, but overall it was well-written. Perhaps those sections were less interesting for me as I have heard a lot of that before.

The last chapter in particular was incredibly moving. I'd almost recommend that people read at least that last chapter even if they don't have a desire to read the entire book. A marvelous account of family and people living together and sharing joy and tears together. A very powerful ending to the book.

Interesting and well-written account of the history of the Smokejumpers and the first large fatal fire in their history. Maclean combines roles of historian, amateur scientist and English professor/writer to create a readable account of some of the early years of this well-known outfit and what was learned from an early, tragic experience.

Very good book! Great discussion about the role of exposure to nature and free play affects the development and health of children, and adults. Extensive review of research and literature, though easy to read. Louv explores why children are not getting exposed to nature as much in recent years (lack of access to parental fears of abduction for example), the basis and history of these factors, the consequences of these changes and also proposes some solutions.

I think anyone as a parent or interested in child development or the environment could get a lot from reading this. I found it fascinating.

This is a wonderful story with great descriptions of characters and place. I agree with others that this has one of the great american friendships in the relationship between Chingachgook and Deerslayer. My one issue with the book was that it could have used better editting as Cooper was prone to repetitive, long epithets for each character--the feeble-mindedness of Hetty, the honesty of Deerslayer--after the first few soliloquies I got the picture. That being said, it was a great book. Well worthy of its place as an American classic.
