It was due back at the library and I couldn't renew because someone else had a hold on it. I will have to get it again to finish the story.
Updike has an odd writing style which was confusing. He would insert a phrase in the middle of a sentence that just jumbled things up and made it difficult to read. Something like "Alex reached for her favorite teacup, received as a gift some time ago from a forgotten occasion and blue in color, and made herself some tea." It really annoyed me.
