yea, it's crazy. she has these very vivid memories of waking up to the air raid sirens going off in the middle of the night and running for the bomb shelters. when my mom and I went back to Berlin together in 2004, she took me to her old apartment building and we walked the route to the nearest bomb shelter (or what used to be the shelter). In fact both buildings on either side of hers were bombed during the war. One has remained an open field but the other was rebuilt. it was a pretty amazing experience to walk around this area with her. I just wish I could talk to my grandmother about it all, but she passed in '86. Although it's not likely she would have discussed it anyway. It was a pretty touchy subject for those that experienced it.

Not only did I find this memoir a painfully honest account of the occupation of Berlin but it is also particularly relevant to my own family's past. My mother was born in Berlin in 1940 amidst the war. As a young girl, my mother, her brother and Grandmother fled to Prussia for safety. However her mother (my grandmother) stayed behind in Berlin to continue with her medical practice. My Grandmother and the author where the same age at the time this diary was written and I can't help imagining what my grandmother's experience must have been like. Did their paths ever cross?

I lent this book to my mother to read as well. She said she learned more about the war in this book then during her whole childhood. As is mentioned in the forward, things of this matter simply were not discussed. Ever.

I understand the author's wish for anonymity especially after the response to the book (after its initial release). I am, however, very curious to know her fate in the years following the war.
