So far, I'm shocked. An horrifically clever analogy between psychological torture using electroshock therapy and the methods the US government uses to "introduce" capitalism in foreign countries (like Iraq). Don't read this if you believe in the current and past leaders of this country-or Milton Friedman.

I read this book when I was in graduate school studying Latin and Ancient Greek. I was immediately struck by the similarities between Gogol's writing style and the epics of Homer, especially the "Iliad." In particular, Gogol was able to capture Homer's descriptions of the violence of war-vivid, fast-paced and gruesome. Not exactly light reading. But I couldn't put it down-in fact, I'd say Gogol gave Homer a run for his money.

Like a Hungarian Gabriel Garcia Marquez, this author follows one family through centuries of turmoil in Hungary. Knowing absolutely nothing about Hungarian history, I was fascinated by the names, places and events. The family saga was at its best, bittersweet, and at its worst, tortuous. Well written and well translated!

A grown-up, French "Harriet the Spy." I can't say that I gained much insight into the Parisian mindset, but I did enjoy the many references to literature and philosophy-as well as the wry thoughts of the main characters.
