Second in the Takeshi Kovacs series of Morgan's books, "Broken Angels" takes us 40 years into the future since the end of Altered Carbon, and Kovacs role has changed. Now returned to soldiering, he finds an opportunity to escape a conflict he's only too happy to leave behind.
I admit it, I've gotten sucked in to a series. I love Morgan's writing style, I love this character, and I love his twisted futurism. ...less

Morgan seems to reach a little far into the scope of his universe in this prequel of his Takeshi Kovacs character's universe. Market Forces takes us back to the middle of this century, in a world where anything goes to get where you want. Ruthless corporate strategists toast to the small wars that line their pockets, as financing conflict investment for global skirmishes becomes the next Wall Street.
I appreciate Morgan's style and gift with description, but I feel that he lost something with the switch to third person in the telling of this tale. He still focused most of his writing on one character, diverging only occassionaly to build intrigue that never thickened out as much as it should have. I gave it four stars for the relatability of the relationship problems of his main character, and how well he does at building both sides of a failing marriage. ...less

Easily the best cyberpunk book I've read in a long time. Part hard-boiled detective thrillier, part dystopian future, with a lot of great futurist elements I haven't seen employed in many other storylines. Morgan explores the sociological implications of a humanity that doesn't die, at least not easily. Consciousness transfers, body swaps, interplanetary travel as data, I highly recommend this read. ...less
