I personally hated the series. I managed to get through about the fourth book before I gave up. It was too much of a soap opera for me and he played around with too many historical events. If you can get ahold of them, and enjoy church history, watch the Truman Madsen video series called On Sacred Ground; Reflections on Joseph Smith. It is incredible. The historical novel, Saints, by Orson Scott Card is also really good and gave me a better understanding of Polygamy than I have ever had before.

I've read this many times over the years, but finally found it in hardback at a local used bookstore (I snatched it up). I've been able to do much more reading since a recent heart attack and have been catching up with some old favorites. Tom Bodett used to do the Motel 6 commercials, but may be more famous for his radio show. This is the first book based on that show. It is a fun and funny read and is about as G rated as you can get.

Very enjoyable. I actually like Bodett better than Garrison Keillor (and I know I spelled it wrong). His town of crazy eccentrics from his radio show is just more enjoyable to me. I've got to read the rest of the series.

Awful....Just pure drivel. This book came highly recommended by a few co-workers, so I bought and read it and wasted both my time and my money. This re-imagining of the story of The Wizard of Oz (told from the point of the Wicked Witch of the West) makes the witch into the hero and a victim at the same time. It also attempts to define "evil," but does a really poor job of it.

They have now turned this into a Broadway play and have had great success, but considering the world that we live in (where evil is conditional and goodness and truth are not politically correct), this is understandable.

Later today, I am taking my copy of this to a used bookstore and getting rid of it.

As far as your olives comment is concerned, you have obviously never wasted your time reading Proust. His "Remembrance of Things Past" is one of the most boring series ever written. In one book, three chapters are taken up telling us how he feels about the cookies he eats with his morning tea. Unfortunately, I had to read one of his 37 volumes of drivel while at UTEP.

As far as Sparks goes, I once read a chapter of one of my wife's books while bored one day. I remained bored and never picked up anything else by him again.

The true story of the Doolittle bombing run over Tokyo just a few months after Pearl Harbor, as told by one of the pilots.

Okay, so the writing is not that great, but you read the true story of his escape from near capture, his injuries in the crash of his bomber, and his having his leg removed in a small Chinese village while he is conscious.

A great historical read.
