^^I guarentee you that either I or my husband will get a copy of The Lost Symbol this year, despite neither one of us indicating that we want it or even have any interest in reading it (which we don't).

As a cat-hoarder wanna-be, this is the perfect excuse for me:

"Well, honey, I was on my way to the SPCA to get a couple more cats but got distracted by the Barnes&Noble on the corner. But if you want, I can return these books---on my way back to the SPCA..."

I would like to add that hoarding books instead of cats means no litter boxes, no cat hair all over everything, no 3AM wake-up calls, no shredded furniture...there are many advantages to hoarding books over cats.

  	Renee wrote:

Secret Life of Bees - can I have my four hours back?

Funny! I recently read a book called, ironically,The Lost Hours about which I felt exactly the same--those hours really are lost.. Come to think about it, another disappointing book I read (this week) was called The Hour Between--as in, can I have back the hour between when I started this book and when I chucked it across the room?

Almost done with This Is Where I Leave You. I am enjoying it--it's laugh-out-loud funny in places--except for two things: I really dislike the narrator's wife, and the narrator has sex on the brain. It's distracting; but I've heard from experts that, yes, men do think about sex constantly, no matter what else is going on any given moment. Poor things.

Previously this week I finished The Widow of the South and read The Hour Between (meh) and Bad Things Happen (quite good).

After my last disappointing NPR-recommended read I was a little hesitant to start right in on this novel, but no worries--within the first few pages I was completely mesmerized. It starts out with an unusual bang and just keeps on moving, with more twists and turns than the Pacific Coast Highway. Granted, some of them were a bit implausible, but I really didn't care because the characters themselves were just so damned interesting. The prose is elegant, witty, and sparse, without a single awkward turn of phrase. I sincerely hope that I haven't heard the last of Mr. Loogan, Detectives Waishkey and Shan, and Waishkey's unexpectedly charming daughter Sarah. Hint, hint, Mr. Dolan!
