It's not often that I give up on novel, but at about 200 pages into this insufferable look at one woman's self-obsession vis-à-vis cooking, I had to admit that I'd fought the good fight and that it was time to move on. What's most galling here, really, is Powell's comparison of herself to Julia Child - THE paragon of selfless giving... in cookery at least.
