Michele made a comment in the UCSD Diversity Book Club group:
I just listened to an interesting talk Junot Diaz gave in January of 2008. In it, he talks about why he used Spanish without any English translations, comparing it to his use of comic and "nerd" references. With the comic references, many English-speakers still didn't understand them, but since they were in English, readers tended to just gloss over them instead of focusing on the fact that they couldn't understand them. It's an interesting explanation.
