Miranda and her family are the focus of this disaster story. The story is told in the form of diary entries. A meteor has knocked the moon out of it's orbit and as a result there are an increasingly serious number of environmental changes including tsunamis, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions resulting in a sort of nuclear winter type of change in the weather. In addition famine, disease etc take their toll. Thanks to the foresight of Miranda's mother the family has stocked up on food, fuel for the woodstove etc and so are better off than many other people in their small town. They too eventually begin to feel the deprivations and
what the book does well is show an entitled young girl who slowly realizes that her world truly has changed and who begins to mature and change into a truly worthy person.
It's not the best at showing how vile people probably would become if such an event should occur. For example, no one ever tries to take the families supplies away from them or from their elderly neighbor.
A few other minor details, Miranda continues to skate even after the point where she should be fairly weak from the lack of food and the amount of work she has been doing.
The ending is also a little weak but over all a good swift read.
First a word about the reader, this is supposed to be a thriller yet the reader in this instance seemed to pause and slow the action down. I repeatedly found myself switching the tape off and going back to the radio.
As for the book itself: Wordy, tedious, way, way, way more convoluted than I was able to keep up with. The climatic scene totally turned me off what little I had liked about the book. I found it played out like an adolescent male's version of a revenge fantasy against the terrorists crossed with a little bit of a snuff film Yeech.

I almost didn’t finish this book. The beginning was slow and the main character of Nick was VERY unsympathetic. I did appreciate the dark tone of the book as well as the concept of magicians having to call demons to obtain power and the consequences of doing this. I also found the last 40 pages to be quite gripping. I’ll read the second in the series but hope the pace is a little faster in the second volume.

Beginning of the book very good, ending good, middle not so much.
I found none of the characters to be particularly sympathetic nor did I care about most of them.
