Life as seen from the viewpoint of a dog, Enzo, who's owner Denny is a racecar driver.

Although the story is near cliche melodrama, it works really well exactly because of the unique concept, Garth Stein's wit, and his ability to execute Story (well-paced).

If the book were to be adapted into a movie I could see a Frank Capra directing the movie. It's warm and ultimately crushing, as all dog stories go. One could argue preachy, but uplifting nonetheless.

On the cover Sara Gruen's quote is something to the effect of "I loved this book" and I agree with her. Maybe I'm just cheesy but it is a top 15 book for me.

Going back to the basics. I guess I can say it's great because I learned from it. Also, it deals with screenplay as opposed to fiction, and goes as far as to say Literary vs. Commercial.
