Possibly even better than the first Frank Miller dark knight book, which is saying quite a bit, though the stakes here have been elevated to a fairly cosmic (and possibly over-the-top ridiculous) level, with every superhero in the DC universe (well, several of them at least) joining in the fight to save the planet. Lots of psychedelic brain explosions in this book, as well as multilinear storytelling, end-of-the-world/end-of-life panic and bizarre moral quandary. A book that, by the time I was halfway through, I knew I needed to own. I went out and bought both volumes a day after finishing this.

I thought at first that this was a three-volume work, until I finished volume two and unhappily realized that it was over.

File under the following imaginary, just invented shelves:
books that will change a kid's life forever
books that love humanity better than they love patriotic myths
books that are so well-crafted they're a little upsetting
books with so much ambition that they make writing books seem important again
