Do you love (reading about) drugs, mafioso, match fixing, murder and grown men breaking down into tears?
Who doesn't?
All of these things are par for the course with Italian Calcio (soccer), and this book encapsulates them with a novelist's eye as it follows the true story of Castel di Sangro, the minnow who swam with the sharks. Forza di Sangro!

The best fantasy novel of all time. Read it now before the HBO miniseries starts, and share the love.
Or, to be more accurate; share the horror, intrigue, incest, murder, torture, warfare and political scheming that is this fantasy retelling of our real-world War of the Roses.
Martin's imaginary world is *absolutely* perfectly made, and the characterizations are as good as any I've ever read, genre aside. The plot is consistently gripping, and for three full novels (looong novels at that), moves from one "oh no he di'n't" moment to the next. You will think "this can't possibly get any worse!" (and by "worse," of course, I mean "better") at least two dozen times.
It's like a soap opera, but with characters that actually resonate, and instead of snarky quips, these brutish divas use swords, blood and fire. ...less

Soccer doesn't actually explain the world.
But if you were a highly adept essayist who happens to really love the sport, you could travel around Europe and use the theme of globalization to tie together a half-dozen or so essays about European soccer into a wonderful whole that examines the passionate culture that surrounds the Beautiful Game.
I mean, that's what I'd do.
Make no mistake, despite the lofty title (and its intellectual implications), this is light reading. Smartly written, to be sure, but ultimately quite fun and easy on the cranium. You'll blaze through it in a few sittings, and when you've finished, you'll hate Red Star Belgrade and Hristo Stoichkov as much as I do....less
