The obstacles that Janie Crawford overcomes seem almost impossible, but yet she does so in a heroic fashion. Janie is the focal point of Zora Neale Hurston’s propelling novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, a story about how Janie struggles through the ups and downs of life, while trying to remain acceptable in the eyes of the society. It seems as though, Hurston penned the novel to act as a remedy for individuals facing troubling situations, while allowing Janie to the character that readers could relate too. Janie faces many realistic problems such as: a broken home, failed relationships, as well as a class struggle among society. These crises are thrown Janie’s way, and she is forced to act abruptly with her back against the wall.
The character of Janie acts as the light to the book by shinning throughout hardships that are thrown her way. Janie is ideal African American woman in the south during the early 1900’s. Her strong willing personality makes Janie one of the most interesting and in depth characters in the book. Many different factors fall into place to make Janie the not so typical woman among other females in the book. She is sometimes seen as a threat to opposing men, but is still envied by admiring women. Despite how other people view Janie, she struggles to find herself throughout the novel, having many altercations with her inner feelings and the outer advice that is bestowed upon her by her grandmother and other people.
As the book begins, Janie has already completed her spiritual journey to find herself. As she sits down with one of few close friends, Pheoby Watson, Janie explains the journey that has lead her back to the all black town of Eatonville, Florida; a town built as a refuge for suppressed blacks. Questions begin to surface as to why Janie as returned, and to why she has returned alone, seeing as how she left with a young man by the name of Tea Cake. Many rumors are tossed about speculating that Janie was ripped of by Tea Cake, and that he was only interested in her feelings and not her emotions. Janie meets the rumors with only a smile and laughter, and tells Pheoby that the people have to discover what love is, because Janie herself has “been to the horizon and back.” The tenacity that Janie shows is a reoccurring theme throughout the book as she tries to set the building blocks that allow her to take the proper steps that allow her to live a life that she is comfortable with.
Their Eyes Were Watching God is an uplifting novel that gives courage to the readers. It meets the modern world with modern characters that deal with problems in unlikely ways. Many of the characters posses many unique traits, but are shaped but the opinion of other characters. As the book unfolds, it reveals many shocking and enlightening information that acts as pieces to the puzzle for people such as Janie.
Their Eyes Were Watching God contains many complex characters that add turmoil and insight to the book. Characters such as Nunkie, cause conflict within social relationship. Whether Nunkie’s “harmless” flirting is intentional or not it adds to the interesting plot that escalates as the story reaches the climax.
Other characters such as Nanny acts as a support system to characters like Janie. Nanny plays a key role in raising Janie due to the absence of her mother, and is the primary reason to why Janie views the world the way she does until Janie is able to come into her own. It is clear that Nanny only wants the best for her grand daughter, despite if it neglects Janie’s feelings. In a sense you can’t blame Nanny for wanting to see Janie excel in life coming from where they came from, although at times it seems as though Nanny is living her life through Janie.
In all Their Eyes Were Watching God is a great piece of literature that addresses many different areas of life from; relationships, racism, as well individuals struggling to find themselves. The way that the novel deals with problems makes it a book that is readable for almost any audience that is able to comprehend the in in-depth meaning that Their Eyes Were Watching God has to offer.
