I wasn't overly impressed with this book. It was good, but I wouldn't call it great. I have heard so many great things about this book, and I've heard it compared to Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson several times, but I just wasn't overly impressed. It might be that I had higher expectations and it didn't meet them, but the writing didn't captivate me, and I wasn't really sucked into Callie's story. It didn't feel realistic too me- didn't resonate. I felt detached from everything happening in the story. There was no emotion. Some books are told with a short of emotional detachment that really hammers in the effect of the story, but this one was too simplistic and too empty for me to care about what really happened to the story. The realization of Callie, the ending scene, the first time she speaks... None of it had any emotional impact. There was such promise in this book, but it just felt really empty.

I really liked this book. Sharon Creech has been one of my favorite authors for a long time, and even though this book is really short, and rather simple, I thought it was really cute! I liked it better than Love That Dog because Jack is more developed and more mature. There is more to the story in this book. I also LOVED that Jack really begins to understand and appreciate the magic of words, both reading and writing.

I've read just about every Sharon Creech book I could find. She has been one of my favorite authors since reading Walk Two Moons in elementary school, a book that is still on my list of very most favorites. I read her books both as a much younger child through today, and I have to say that this is the only one I've read that I feel is sort of meh. I just didn't really feel the story the way I have her others. Even her short books in verse felt more real to me. I did like to book, but it is my least favorite of all I have read by her. Sad...

This was a cute story written in verse. If I could, I'd really give it 3.5 stars. (Ahem...) Anyway, this was a really fast read, but both it and the sequel were really cute, and worth the 20 minutes it took to read them.

I LOVE this book! It is one of my favorite books, and definitely my favorite Avi book on either list.
This is one of those books, that even though the ending isn't totally realistic I loved it. I think it is fabulous!
I would love to be Charlotte. I also really liked the way to story was written, like the diary of a young girl.

I read it a little over a year ago, and don't really remember tons about the story. I do remember that I thought it was cute, and that I probably would have related more to it if I were younger.
It's not on my list of favorite Newbery's but it's definitely not on the list of bad choices either. What I remember most is that the story was cute.

While it's not quite 5 stars, I think it was close. More like 4 and 3/4, or so. I loved it! It's rather fairy tale-esq, and just a lot of fun to read. It held my attention very well, was well written, and believable. A great read!
