          <body><![CDATA[When I was eight, I read Louisa May Alcott's &quot;Little Women&quot; for the first time.  And then I read it again - about twenty-five times in that first year, slurping it up like a delicious piece of my favorite dessert.  It was the first time I ever realized that books could be tastier than cake...<a g%20away%20her%20leather%20belts%20and%20giving%20her%20rainbow%20silk%20sashes;%20taking%20away%20her%20coffee%20and%20making%20her%20milk%20the%20cown%20and%20drink%20her%20fresh%20milk%20from%20a%20cool%20carved%20mug.%20I%20still%20like%20reading%20them.%20And%20I%20like%20Rose:%20%20she%20can%20be%20priggish,%20but%20there%20is%20something%20very%20endearing%20about%20her;%20I%20like%20how%20hard%20she%20tries%20to%20be%20a%20good%20person.%20%20That's%20something%20you%20rarely%20read%20about%20it%20children's%20literature%20any%20more%20(except%20for%20you,%20darling%20Harry%20Potter!)%20%20I%20think%20authors%20and%20publishers%20have%20come%20to%20believe%20that%20minor%20ethical%20dilemmmas%20are%20boring%20to%20children,%20but%20you%20know%20what%3F%20%20Considering%20the%20parents%20most%20kids%20have,%20I%20think%20it's%20helpful%20to%20them%20to%20have%20SOME%20kind%20of%20moral%20compass.">more...</a>]]></body>

The dog broke free, and Rich went into the road to save him, and was hit by a car.  Traumatic brain injury. I heard about Jane Gardam on NPR(I had never heard of her) - she's a British author and she has won the Whitbread Award TWICE.           <body><![CDATA[I half-started this in the bookstore (yes, I am that woman!  the one who reads the book AT THE DISPLAY TABLE and won't move out of your way!) but was put off by the first few paragraphs.  Maggie O'Farrell uses the (to me) annoying literary device of writing in the present tense, and I just can't hel...<a href="http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/I%20half-started%20this%20in%20the%20bookstore%20(yes,%20I%20am%20that%20woman!%20%20the%20one%20who%20reads%20the%20book%20AT%20THE%20DISPLAY%20TABLE%20and%20won't%20move%20out%20of%20your%20way!)%20but%20was%20put%20off%20by%20the%20first%20few%20paragraphs.%20%20Maggie%20O'Farrell%20uses%20the%20(to%20me)%20annoying%20literary%20device%20of%20writing%20in%20the%20present%20tense,%20and%20I%20just%20can't%20help%20it:%20%20it%20always%20strikes%20me%20as%20pretentious%20and%20somewhat%20precious.%20%20But%20I%20was%20wrong%20to%20set%20the%20book%20down%20and%20walk%20away,%20though%20my%20doing%20so%20may%20have%20gratified%20the%20irate%20fellow-shopper%20who%20was%20trying%20to%20get%20past%20me.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe%20book%20is%20very,%20very%20good.%20%20This%20is%20how%20good:%20%20I%20didn't%20skip%20to%20the%20end%20as%20I%20%5Balmost:%5D%20always%20do.%20%20It's%20about%20Iris,%20who%20receives%20a%20call%20from%20a%20local%20mental%20hospital%20regarding%20her%20great-aunt%20Esme,%20a%20great%20aunt%20that%20she%20didn't%20know%20existed.%20%20Esme%20has%20been%20istitutionalized%20for%2061%20years%20for%20the%20%22mental%20illness%22%20of%20not%20wanting%20her%20hair%20cut%20and%20not%20wanting%20to%20be%20charming%20to%20the%20boys.%20(O'Farrell%20did%20her%20research%20-%20these%20cases%20were%20real%20and%20not%20that%20uncommon%20-%20one%20teenager%20was%20hospitalized%20for%20%22wanting%20to%20take%20long%20solitary%20walks.%22)%20%20The%20story%20is%20riveting,%20and%20it%20is%20tragic,%20and%20it%20is%20intriguing%20to%20see%20how%20Iris%20could%20have%20been%20Esme%20but%20isn't%20because%20of%20her%20location%20in%20time.%20%20And%20the%20only%20reason%20I%20didn't%20give%20it%205%20stars%20is%20because%20part%20of%20the%20narration%20is%20done%20by%20Esme's%20sister%20with%20Alzheimer's%20and,%20yo,%20Maggie,%20people%20with%20Alzheimer's%20don't%20talk%20like%20that.%20%20And,%20well,%20that%20whole%20present%20tense%20thing.%20%20">more...</a>]]></body>

It had a lot of interesting chapters, even if they tended to skim the surface of what initially promised to be a rather fascinating subject.  But it's a BIG subject, and the book is relatively short, so you know...one shouldn't expect too much.
