<span id="freeTextreview_rating68022098" style="display:none" class="reviewText">Fast-paced with a complex plot and good characters. The first book in the series (<em>The Mermaids Singing</em>) was more of a straightforward police procedural with good characters; the single investigation drove the plot and occasionally gave space to explore the characters. But by this book, the number of characters expand, are put into new jobs/situations, and are kept moving through multiple investigations. The investigations are not the central driver for the plot, but rather come in as plot devices to bring the characters together and put them in motion. I think the main villain is still a bit too arch, but thankfully the interspersed memoirs from the killer, featured in the first book, do not appear.
<br/>
<br/>I picked these books up because a character from <em>The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo</em> reads one. A bit strange to get a author recommendation through another author's character, but it was a good suggestion. <a href="#" onclick="Element.hide('freeTextreview_rating68022098'); Element.show('freeTextContainerreview_rating68022098'); return false;">(less)</a></span>

  		Hans, I've never heard of someone reading a book because of a fictional character's actions, but I have to say, I really like your thinking. You are such an interesting mixture of right and left brain.

    			  This is a collection of Vietnamese short-stories from famous native authors. The rhythm of many of the stories is different than Western writing, so one story I just couldn't parse. Most, though, were interesting and allowed another glimpse into a fascinating country.

    			  What is it about polgamy that I find so interesting?
<br/>
<br/>Excellent story about two women bound up in polygamous lifestyles; one in the present and one (real character) from the past who was one of Brigham Young's wives.

  		I fell into the story and hated to come to the end, a mark of a good book for me. I appreciated being able to differently view a piece of history we Americans generally know from one angle; though I should quickly add here that this is not a book of what is typically thought of as historical fiction. Anyway -- Anna, thank you for the excellent suggestion.
