I have to admit that I was a little skeptical when my friend first recommend this book to me. I like Science Fiction; that wasn't the problem. I had seen part of the movie and it was the type of Science Fiction that I did not like (i.e. star wars esque with a lot of fighting). I seem to prefer post-apocalyptic stories or dystopian stories. My friend promised me that I would enjoy the book from a philosophical perspective and I did enjoy it in that way very much.
The book has a lot to say on many different things. It's very pro-military and includes quotes from the likes of Tom Paine and Thomas Jefferson. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. Sometimes you really should listen to your friends on these matters :) ...less

Chuck Palahniuk is known for writing really strange books. "Snuff" was no different but I suggest that if you want to get a better idea of him as a writer, you read "Fight Club" or "Survivor." I did not really care for "Snuff" at all. At a paltry 197 pages, I found myself wanting the book to be over even quicker than it was. ...less

Tanya is a Russian girl growing up during the Soviet era. She becomes very interested in the story of the author Feodor Dostoevsky, his wife and his mistress. She decides that her purpose in life is to be a muse to a writer.
She immigrates to the U.S. and meets Mark, a writer who is supposedly interested in Dostoevsky. At first, Tanya is happy to play muse to Mark until she realizes that she is not really a muse to him but a mere human comfort and thus the story progresses.
I really enjoyed Vapynar's writing. She gave a real voice to Tanya although I wish that Mark had been fleshed out a little bit more. For being one of the central characters, he seemed a little flat and not particularly personable but then again, that could have been the author's intention. ...less

This was the first book I had read about Julavits. It is about a teenage girl who may or may not have been abducted. Julavits has the book organized into alternating chapters divided between what might have happened, chapters from after her supposed abduction and chapters about the girl as an adult.
The main character, Mary Veal, is likable and Julavits has given her a very real voice. The writing is really good and very engaging. I found myself absorbed in the book. I definitely will look forward to reading Julavits' other books as well.

This is the story of a family learning to cope with their son's autism and also the story of a marriage falling apart. I'm very much so interested in autism and although this book is fictional, I thought it was very interesting to get a picture of a family coping with autism.
It's written in first point of view from the mother's perspective so I really feel like you are able to get into the story....less

I was thoroughly disappointed with this book. I had read Krauss' "The History of Love" a few years ago and was thrilled with the writing. Perhaps I had too many expectations for "Man Walks Into a Room," which I believe was her first novel. The characters are boring and the ending is not particularly noteworthy. Read "The History of Love," pass this book up....less
