"I'd read this faster if I didn't have to put it down and grit my teeth so often remembering how condescended-to I was, being female, into computers and comics, and into writing and arguing literary theory when I was younger. Fuck, it makes me want to punch people." Jan 26, 2012 10:50pm

The prose was sharp and engaging, the magical realism well handled, and it was REALLY fun to have female characters who have sexual appetites (crazy, right?) but "characters drift through unlikely scenarios and approach the very edge of having an act...more

Less a horror movie on paper than a murder ballet. How this book manages to swing both "economical, graceful prose" and "jaw-dropping violence" at the same time, I do not know. Color me impressed.

Jonathan Safran Foer
“In bed that night I invented a special drain that would be underneath every pillow in New York, and would connect to the reservoir. Whenever people cried themselves to sleep, the tears would all go to the same place, and in the morning the weatherman could report if the water level of the Reservoir of Tears had gone up or down, and you could know if New York is in heavy boots.”
Jonathan Safran Foer, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

David James Duncan
“Punctuationally speaking, wonder is a period at the end of a statement we've long taken for granted, suddenly looking up and seeing the sinuous curve of a tall black hat on its head, and realizing it was a question mark all along.”
David James Duncan, My Story as Told by Water: Confessions, Druidic Rants, Reflections, Bird-Watchings, Fish-Stalkings, Visions, Songs and Prayers Refracting Light, from Living Rivers, in the Age of the Industrial Dark

“The other fifty percent of those seriously misguided individuals who claim to be Neil naysayers are probably being one hundred percent honest when they make the shocking and outrageous claim to "not be fans." They are, nonetheless, also one hundred percent wrong. While casting no aspersions whatsoever about their moral character, they probably either utterly pretentious poseurs or totally vicious bastards.”
David Wild, He is...I Say: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Neil Diamond

Ray Bradbury
“And suddenly everything, absolutely everything, was there.”
Ray Bradbury, Dandelion Wine
