I always think of him as a quiet, soulful storyteller. The themes that always come up for me when I read him are those of religion and family: devotion, loyalty, kept secrets, loss. His female narrators are as authentic as his male.
A nice book to pick and choose from.

A twelve year-old boy is wrongly interrogated and punished for the death of a 7 year-old girl. The bulk of the book is the interrogation itself where the point of views jumps back and forth between the twelve year old and his interrogator. Intriguing, but will not hold most teens' attention.
