What irritated me was the lack of emphasis given to the really important events and emotions of the book- events which are later referenced in great detail in its sequel, The Stone Key. Thus, I read its sequel and remembered events of all of its predecessors except for the most recent one!

In some ways Alyzon Whitestarr is almost a follow-up to Isobelle Carmody's The Gathering.

Alyzon Whitestarr, seemingly the ordinary, odd one out in her talented, disorganised loving family has an accident and suddenly is able to smell the essence and emotions of the people around her- and with physical contact, to even glimpse their emotional flashbacks. At first this ability overwhelms her. As she begins to adjust to her new life and abilities, however, she becomes aware of a curious disease of the soul which seems to be affecting humanity, and the people around her...

Strange and horrifying events seem to quietly happen in her town and the neighbouring town. But why? And how do the seemingly handsome, charming Harlen Sanderson and the oily artist manager Aaron Rayc fit into this? And what then, of her family?

This book is a different take on similar issues as were tackled in The Gathering. In fact, the very "banality of evil" and its meaning, origin and existence in everyday lives. Like the previous book, it is set within a modern and far less magical setting than her usual books. Unlike the previous book, this book is much longer and in some ways slightly more adult, with more intimation of sex and of some darker themes. This is however still wholeheartedly suitable for teenagers. And for adults.

For anyone who believes in the existence of good and evil- and for all who do not, this is a good read. ]]>
