Meh.

OK, I didn't read #1 first, but this one seemed to stand alone well.

Feels like a clear tribute to Carriger's Parasol series, which is fine. Dredmore is Akeldama, but the world can't have too many of those.

Heroine with magic-killing power? Good

Folks, you DID expect a lightweight story here, didn't you? There are a few reviews that seemed to expect something more like Dickens or Dostoevsky, tackling issues of social justice head on. I wanted a fun story.
I was pleased to see that it didn't

I'll skip the plot summary since Wendell Adams has written a 449-word one earlier (!)

I hadn't heard of this book as I plowed my way through the entire Vlad Taltos and Phoenix Guards series.
This one was written in 1985, after Jhereg and Yendi. Brust

First off, I really like Wilson's idea that there's a secret history behind the real events we've all seen.
But I'm not so keen on the implementation.

Maybe I'm not being fair. My only other R-Jack novel was #7, Gateway. But this one appeared in fron

Hard SF, and the stories have aged surprisingly well for a 1995 book, stories likely written 1994 or earlier so they are 20 years old.

Good variety, some now-famous authors (I forget whether they were famous then).

But if you don't like hard SF you w

Awards, shmawards. Didn't like it. Didn't finish it, and I very rarely do that.

Lookit, there are some paragraphs in there that are three-quarters of a page long.

There are elegant descriptive passages that would make Proust weep.
It is these that mak

Competent, not very exciting space opera.

It's not a good sign that on completing this book I looked in my notes to discover that I hadn't read books 2 and 5 in the series of 6 - and at no time did I have any sense that I'd missed anything.

A Stranger in Olondria by Sofia Samatar
"I found this book nearly unbearable to read. It had lifeless characters, a confused and meandering plot and many irrelevant digressions that add nothing to the story. Even worse, the female characters seem to be either bitter, oppressed victims or..." Read more of this review »

A Stranger in Olondria by Sofia Samatar
"This is a tough book to review, and I'll tell you why.

This book has the most beautiful language I've seen in a long, long time. Perhaps ever. (Aspiring authors, DO NOT READ THIS. You will cry and feel like a failure by comparison.)

It's evocative a..." Read more of this review »
