2009 #41: I really didn't want to read Alice Sebold's first book The Lovely Bones. The only reason I ended up reading it was because I was in charge of a book club where the members voted to read it. Much to my surprise, Alice managed to turn the story of a young girl's murder into something really touching. So when I heard that my new book club was reading Lucky, I felt mixed emotions. On one hand, Alice Sebold had proven that she could handle disturbing incidents in a way that made for a compelling story. On the other hand, Lucky represents the true story of a rape that Alice experienced, which had the potential to be much harder to read than a story that was fiction. 2009 #39: I had already seen the first two series of the HBO series True Blood (which is based on this series of books) when I read this book. While the show doesn't stay exactly faithful to the book, it follows the general plot points pretty well. 2009 #38: This was similar to Chelsea Handler's other book My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One-Night Stands. If you hate Chelsea's comedy, you will probably hate it. 2009 #37: This wouldn't have been a book that I would have picked out to read, someone lent it to me. I have seen Chelsea Handler's show, and sometimes find it a little crude and mean. But, I found myself laughing out-loud several times throughout this book.
