The characters weren't engaging to me... I had a hard time with names like "Comfort, Declaration, Tidings, ect." and Comfort's dog is named Dismay. It made it feel like it was supposed to be allegorical...or just annoying. The story is also all homey and folksy and Southern, but that got tiring after a short while. Apparently it did not get tiring to the National Book Award committee who nominated it for that award in 2006.
Good things:
It has a map in the front. I like books that have maps.
Comfort's "Top Ten Tips for First-rate Funeral Behavior" written for the local paper- funny and sweet.

Short story odes to geekdom interspersed with single page comics. Sometimes very funny, sometimes very tedious (this is coming from someone who does not identify as geek, but maybe geek-lite....my fav part of the book is the comic outlining the lunch room hierarchy of the various geek clans...I could sit at two of the tables (band geek and theater tech/drama club tables) but would have no place at the computer nerd clan nor among the role players/gamers..though I did have some friends over there.
Good for a few chortles....possibly more for nostalgic adult geeks than for teens? (Buffy fans...you know who you are. Adult women knitting Jayne Cobb's hat...you know who you are.)
