I had read this before and was frankly underwhelmed, considering how several of my friends had raved about it. One of my students suggested I read it again, as it had a profound influence on him and encouraged his love for reading. I guess the problem is mine, because I still find it underwhelming. The nihilistic contemplations of narrator/Tyler are certainly disturbing, but if Palahniuk was going for some sort of dystopic vision of the disaffection of young men in a materialistic society, he falls short. One of my students is using this book as an example of the youth as outsider for his course essay, so I figured I should finally take it off my shelf. Quite well written. An interesting narrative perspective - not at all as maudlin as I thought it might be. It reminded me a bit in style of Jodi Picoult.

Fascinating book about postapocalyptic England and a teenage boy trying to figure out the connections between distant past and his personal future. VERY difficult to teach to a group of first-year university students though, since Hoban has created a phonetic-based, destabilized version of slang English that emphasizes the themes but requires great concentration. ]]>
