I totally agree. I was frustrated that Daniel didn't follow through on the Nuria lead right away. Obviously that story line was going to go somewhere -- why couldn't it have happened sooner rather than later?

This book was up against some hefty expectations. Not only is it the sequel to The Hunger Games--which I gave 5 stars--but it has appeared on a number of "Best of 2009" lists.
I was disappointed by the first third of the book. How, I wondered, could this book possibly be as thrilling as Hunger Games when the games themselves were over? Without spoiling anything, I'll just say that things do get more interesting. MUCH more interesting.
I found more flaws with this book than with its predecessor. Katniss's character development bothered me a few times here; she is at once naive and jaded. At times I felt she was overly childlike in her thoughts of romance; at others, seemingly quite nonchalant about sex. Perhaps this comes from the fact that she's only 17 but has supported her family and killed many times. But I think some of it may come from the fact that the author is an adult trying to figure out how to write a character that is neither an adult nor a child.
This book ends with a definite cliff-hanger--much more so than Hunger Games--and in some ways its hard to judge this book without seeing how the rest unfolds. But overall it is a compelling story that I strongly recommend to everyone who enjoyed the first book. ]]>
