When I first read this book, 40 years ago, I simply thought it was a fantastical tale, not in any way remotely related to anything going on in the world. But when I reread it last year, I was amazed at how much of it is coming true around us, and how this book explains some things in politics that I cannot make sense of in any other fashion.
The Centennial Edition has an extra feature, a foreward by Thomas Pynchon. It has miscellaneous information about Orwell, including this interesting note: The novel ends with Winston Smith being demolished by torture, but that's only where the novel ends -- not where the book ends. The book continues with an appendix on Newspeak, but the appendix is written in past tense and in ordinary English. Orwell insisted that the appendix be included, even though the publishers wanted to omit it. Pynchon suggests -- and I think he's right -- that this was Orwell's way of ending the book on an optimistic note. Near the end of the novel, when Smith is being tortured, he says to his torturer that though he himself has failed, someday mankind will succeed in overcoming the brutal dictatorship. The appendix supports that belief.
I'm writing this review in spring 2008. Will Cheney bomb Iran, declare martial law, and postpone elections? I don't know. But even if he does, I don't think his brutal dictatorship will last forever.

A fifth of our society is crazy: they are people who do not question authority, and who attack anyone that does question authority. Bush's approval rating will never drop below 20 percent NO MATTER WHAT HE DOES. We all need to understand these people better. Altemeyer is a brilliant psychologist who has done real experiments; I think he knows what he's talking about.

This book is sort of a religion for atheists. It doesn't have much plot. I liked it -- I agree with most of its description of the universe, though if I had been asked I wouldn't have formulated it in quite such a whimsical way. This book is available free online.
Its sequel, "The Religion War," is not free, but you can buy it online. It's got more of a plot, and I liked it a lot. The main character is a very enlightened dude; he is introduced in "God's Debris." I don't think I'll ever be as enlightened as he is, but he gives me something to aspire to.
