What a disappointment. The reviews were not that favorable, so my expectations were pretty low, but I think even so they were not met. To begin, I thought the plot was predictable. Sure, there were some twists and turns thrown in, but for the most part every development was telegraphed. Furthermore, some scenes played out exactly as they do in other works of the genre that Wolfe seemed to be approximating. Wolfe does a pretty good job trying to capture the spirit of a college like Dupont (based on Duke, I'm assuming?) through his use of language. While this strategy succeeds in some places, it fails miserably in others. See, e.g., the use of the word loins, the "Sarc" numbering. Overall, not a bad effort for Wolfe, but the utter predictability of the plot made what little care I had for Charlotte sort of pointless because I knew how she was going to turn out in the end. Provides a pretty good overview of the varied options w/r/t formal bankruptcy as well as pre-bankruptcy workouts and strategies for investing in distressed debt. Memoir of former New York magazine food critic. Interesting, if only for the bordering-on-pornographic descriptions of her decadent meals with some of the best chefs of the last fifty years. She also slept with a lot of people. Could have used some serious editing.
