As a mom still in the midst of my son's first year I thoroughly enjoyed this book. However, the story is good enough that even folks without kids will enjoy it. My favorite part is when after being pregnant, giving birth, and nursing for several months Anne declares, "My boy deserves an awards banquet." This book was quite enjoyable and a very fast read, although the ending was a bit melodramatic. I was fascinated by See's portrait of 19th century China. She makes the reader understand why women, because of cultural constraints, would do things that are unacceptable today, such as binding a daughter's feet and staying in a loveless abusive marriage. It makes one appreciate the freedom that we have today but also makes me wonder what we do that someone from another culture, 100 years from now, would find unthinkably cruel.
