I'm not sure whether to give this book a 3 or a 4. I do like that Pirsig approached the philosophy discussion in a way that was attainable and understandable for non-philosophy types, but there were times that the lessons dragged on a bit for me. I think as a philosophy book I'd give it a 3. However I enjoyed the story of the cross-country trip and the backstory of the narrator's mental breakdown. Those I give a 4. I also, for some reason, really enjoyed the early discussions on motorcycle maintenance, accurate or not. It was a bit of a slog, but I'm glad I picked it up for book club, even though I didn't make it to the club discussions (which might have made my overall impressions a bit more studied and clearer).

An enjoyable easy read that retells the story of German occupation of the Channel Islands in letter format. I liked the quirky islander characters and the tales from the Occupation. I did think that the story was a bit too tidy and the letters did all feel to be of the same voice despite the differences between the characters that were writing them. Most of the plot turns were predictable from a mile away, but the telling still held my interest and kept me up late trying to finish the book last night.

Beautifully written, engaging love triangle. It was not a quick read, and there were glaring character defects that made the story interesting, but also detracted a bit from the idea of this being a sweeping triumphant love story. Complicated and interesting.

Huh. I thought maybe it would translate better in movie format because at least you'd get to see Moroccan landscapes. Good to know. :)
