I'm not a fan of mysteries, generally. They have to have some really intriguing characters or exceptional writing to interest me at all. This book has both. Perhaps because I was warned that the 20 year old mystery wasn't going to be solved at the end, I was able to relax and enjoy the unfolding of it for the lyrical and heartbreaking thing that it is. I'm not sure the mystery *could* have been solved in this book; certainly the viewpoint character (who I completely adore) isn't capable of discovering it.

I really am looking forward to the next book by French; her writing style reminds me of John Connolly and Dennis Lehane, both of whom are among my very favorites.

Pardon me while I take a few minutes to gloat.

Okay...now you understand how I can mock the books for their many flaws, and yet be unable to put them down! There's heroin mixed into the ink or something.... ;) I think you'll like Eclipse even more; there's SO much less moaning and crying!
