I love this book and dont want it to end. It is an unusual style for me since the entire novel is composed of letters to and from each of the characters. It is like watching an old World War Two movie.

Maura, I am currently reading one of her earlier books. Apparently she has 3 novels with the same main characters, Liu Hulan who is a police investigator and her American husband David who is a lawyer. They reside in China and are both involved in different parts of the same investigation. Well written but a little graphic. MaryEllen

I love this book and it is not a subject I was drawn to. It is about a Benedictine Abbey for women and they are contemplative, only see visitors through a grille once they have taken their vows. It is peaceful but the group of nuns create their own enviroment. The main character does not enter the order until she is in her early forties and her adjustment is somewhat difficult. The author is English but lived in India until she was a teenager. She describes the individual sisters and their differences so that each character is seen as an individual, not just a member of a group. Although they are not in the world, like any community, they worry about money and gardening and rehearsing the choir for holidays and holy days. I am reading it slowly now because I don't want it to end. I was not familiar with this book but apparently it was made into a movie.

I am enjoying this book, fiction but based on a real couple in Poland who hid Jews from the Warsaw Ghetto in their zoo outbuildings or empty animal cages. The zookeeper also was allowed to visit the ghetto and he took advantage of that situation by surrepticially bringing food and letters and forged papers to Jews who were unable to leave because of the German ocupation. Being caught was punishable by death, not only the individual but his entire family. It is incredible but inspirational that a person will risk his life to help another, especially when the penalty was so great.

I read Interpreter of Maladies and thought it was very well written. I would rather read novels than short stories but this particular collection was an exception. Each indidivual story helped give a picture of Indian life but there were very different characters in each. She has a new book out now but I have not read it although it has received favorable reviews.

MaryEllen

Thanks for the Epicurious information. The co-op here is actually tagging any product that is local. I think it is something to be aware of but I don't know if I would always wait for end of summer for fruits from California that I can have now.

Mary, Just Buffalo brought some authors here last year but next year one of the authors is Isabel Allende and I would really love to see her. Michael Ondaatje is coming too. I never read The English Partinet, I think I only saw the movie. I did read Anil's Ghost. It was about a forensic type anthropoligist who came to India. I actually liked it enough that I almost remember it. MaryEllen
ps How is Liam ?

I love Ann Tyler's characters too. I have an adopted Asian daughter and some of the parents did Americanize their children and others felt compelled to celebrate holidays and have their children wear the native dress of whatever country the child came from. Her book shows both sides of that choice without being judgmental which is respectful of choice.

MaryEllen
