It's the story of a little Jewish girl during the war in Poland, and how she survived inspite of the nazis, concentration camps, disease, and so on.
Some issues to take into consideration are the author's denial of her religion, origin, and language. She's obsessed throughout the book to make sure we understand she's American and that Jews have no place in her life now. Was she so traumatized as to come to this? Or was it the brainwashing?...less

The last three months of Rutka Laskier in the Bedzin guetto in her own words. Yet, I have the feeling I didn't get to know Rutka. True her description of her world is not only scary accurate, but also a bit dettached. The Spanish editors could have done more for the book. The comments written by Juan Cruz and Esther Bendahan aren't worth reading, honestly. I have the feeling this editions was made in a hurry. Rutka doesn't say much and she needs a bit of background to be understood....less

The story of how a woman finds herself by living "lives" other people had somehow set for her. From being innocent and vulnerable, she becomes the most powerful drug smuggler in the Strait of Gibraltar and a legend. Will she survive to it?
Told from the point of view of the author and the main character. This is an wondeful story about a modern issue....less

Throughtout the book, it's easy to discover M. Yourcenar's strong personality and fixed points of view. She lets her correspondents see and follow the creation of some of her most important books. Also, Marguerite discusses a myriad of important (and never outdated) topics in a way that's easy to understand and follow her line of thought. I admire how she was able to analise not only her family, but also politics, culture, art, etc, etc. A great book if you happen to be a fan....less

What a difficult book to read!!!! And, at the end, I don't really know if I sympathized with the characters at all. What caught me into it were the violent passions, the world or week versus strong women, literacy as means of social and emotional growth, and our basic animal instincts underneath all that. Emily Brontë created quite a complicated world. Hard, but good for some brain gymnastics....less

A book devoted to give a more humane image of the natives, but - at the same time - doesn't give them a voice of their own. Native characters aren´t as strong as the white ones and yet they become important by giving their lives in order to fulfill their nation's destiny.
Even though the languages sound quiet pompous now. It's a wonderful novel....less

Reading a biography, a good one, of Emily Dickinson had been one of my most recent goals. She's such a great poets and I know hardly anything about her, so when I found this book in a second-hand bookstore I didn't think it twice and got it.
What a disappointment! Even though the author gives some tidbits of what her life should have been. He focuses much more on her work and poesy technicalities and offers little insight in what her world was. Once I finished, I realised I was still waiting for more....less

"This is the story of the final days of Dominican dictator, Trujillo, and how - even at the end - he managed to ruin many people's lives. It goes from present to past in a unique style and form, which makes it interesting and fast to read.
