I had trouble with this book- though I very much wanted to like it. It has been many years since I have read Ionesco, but I have a special fondness for his writing. Just like in Rhinoceros, the main character of The Hermit is an observer of extreme events which are first unnoticed by those around him, then absorbed and acted upon in extreme and unsettling ways. While this slim volume is not a page turner, it is full of very interesting questions, which I believe are posed to the reader. Ionesco was quoted to have said: "Why do people always expect authors to answer questions? I am an author because I want to ask questions. If I had answers, I'd be a politician." This book has some particularly interesting themes, among them the damaging aspects of propaganda and war. In one section, he walks through a battle on his street and finds that the warring parties are flying the same flag. He is told "They both have field glasses. They must know exactly what they're doing. I suspect two rival leaders of the same group are having it out."
