I just watched The September Issue which details the making of the September issue of Vogue, their biggest yearly issue. The film focusses on Ana Wintour, the famed dragon lady of The Devil Wears Prada and the whacky world of high fashion. Wintour seems to have a Marie Antoinette attitude of "let them eat cake" toward normal women and not uncomfortable to tell Dior his work is not up to snuff. Haute Couture is fascinating, partly because it comes across as a bizarre costume party. It glorifies conspicuous consumption, anorexic models wearing ungodly footwear at unconscionable cost. But it's fun to watch. But why women pay so much for such clothes eludes me.

Hey Philip, thanks for the recommendation for Angel at my Table. I just finished watching it and it was a hard, hard film to watch but worth it; though I gotta admit I was uncomfortable at times.
It was hard watching this pudgy, painfully shy girl with wild hair and wilder imagination growing up in New Zealand--which is both a beautiful and brutal place. There are some magical moments of her childhood like when she and her sisters were dancing in the forest like fairies at night. Or play-acting and collapsing in companionable heaps. It was hard to watch her come within a hair’s width of a lobotomy only to escape because of a book award—what a bizarre and precarious twist. Watching a writer write isn’t generally provocative, but Campion got a sense of how Frame chose this word and not that one, how she beats the words hush-hush-hush in her head and then pounds it out on typewriter.
Just finished listening to Shantaram, an epic novel of an escaped convict in contermporary India. The audio book is 43 hours but very well read by Humphry Bower.
This book makes me appreciate good editors. The story is engaging but tangled, prose is overwrought and the story felt false at several points. For this big an investment of time I want an ephiphany or two. The descriptions of India and the story kept me going. 3 stars if you have time enough and interest in India enough to plow through.

This is classic white trash cuisine; it makes me nostalgic for my mom's cooking. Back when we lived in the trailer park with a rusted out car and sofa in the yard. I'm not sure this book contains her infamous Kanzaa Cake
I've just purchased an epic India novel called Shantaram, It is 43 hours long. That should help me get through a 21 hour flight to India.
