I really like historical fiction and this one was about something I never before really thought about. It was the scientists that were recruited by the government to make the atomic bomb. Other than a few curse words it could have left out, I thought it was a great insight into what life would have been like for those living in the "secret" base and then what happened at the site where they actually tested the bomb. I was fascinated by it and could commiserate with the mother about what they had just really accomplished and the horror of it....less

I liked this book probably more than the 3 stars, but I had a hard time with a couple of the statements made in the book. I always like "good vs. evil" books that focus on the good, but a few things the author said left me a little unsure if I could really recommend this to others. It is entertaining. I also had a hard time with the whole "smoking" part....less

I liked this book, but it was not exceptional. I was never comfortable with all of the stealing that the children have to do to make a living. I compared it to "The Boxcar Children" in that they were able to manage without actually stealing. Anyway, if you can overlook that, it was a pretty fun book....less

"This book is about the plagues that swept through Europe, although this town is only minimally affected. I really enjoyed it, although the ending was a little farfetched for me...but it is fiction.
