Reading this completed my Jane Austen reading Marathon. This is a quick read (probably could do it in a good 45 minutes) and at first is a bit intriguing, but in the end kind of is abrupt and falls flat. It's almost as though Someone was calling Austen at the time, and she had to go. I liked that for the first time out of all her books she explores a darker character, one who is devious and selfish, but who in the end, of course, doesn't quite get everything she wants. I think that this would actually make a wonderful screen play if given the right screenwriter to fill in all the gaps. ...less

This was actually the first time I have read this (seen the films). It was pretty much what I had expected; a little slow, in a bad way, not in the good methodical way. I thought Anne's character was a little annoying at times. She was always so thoughtful and always so complacent that when in the end the hero wants to marry her, I kind of didn't get why. I wish Austen had written a little more interaction between the lovers, or at least mentioned more looks or accidental encounters. I just didn't think that in the end when he confesses that he loved her all along, that he really did. I love a good story about suppressed love, but it has to be obvious that it is actually happening. This one is one of the better of Austen's works, but definitely not my favorite, nor a must read. ...less

I don't think I could have placed this as an Austen work if I hadn't known it. She frequently will speak to the reader as if she were in a conversation with them, and then suddenly back into the book. It is kind of jarring and sometimes feels like when someone is trying way too hard to be someone they're not. The book also felt like two completely different stories combined. The first half was totally different than the last, and then the end was so sudden. I got a little caught up in the story about 3/4s of the way through, and thought it would get increasingly better, but no. Eh. ...less

I've read this before, but as a woman who knows a lot more about life now, saw this book in a different way. I liked how Austen portrays a flawed woman, as we all really are, and how she is a bit selfish, self-centered, and how she has to grow a bit to really get what life is all about. She makes mistakes, and admits is, and tries to grow. I think of all of Austen heroines, she might be one of the easiest to relate to. ...less

Ugh! What can I say about this book?! I hate that I hated it! Austen you crazy woman! What were you thinking?! I found myself doing double takes during this; not believing that it was possible that the same woman who penned Pride and Prejudice could have even read, let alone wrote this boring waste of library space. OK, maybe that is too harsh, but still, theh only reason I could keep reading it was simply because I was determined to read it so I could say I read it! My biggest annoyance was how weak her depiction of Fanny Price (the herione) is. She is mousey and boring, which no inner strength or resolve. I have no probelms with a woman who is quiet and shy, but come on! Fanny Price? She had nothing to redeem her except the passing of time to her favor. Blech!...less

Ooooo, I hate to give this only four stars, but I have to for the way Austen ever so slowly gets you into this book! The first few chapters are a bit brutal, but if you can hold on and keep reading, it is well worth it. I love how Austen is able to show the differences we have as women. How some of us are romantic and outgoing, while others are more methodical and quiet, but in the end, how we all feel, no matter the way it is expressed. As with all of Austen's works, this one you really have to pay close attention to all the words and how she weaves her sentences and the dialogue together, but if you're smart enogh, you'll love it! ;)...less

I'm not sure how many times I've read this (or seen every movie version for that matter) but I just love this book! I recently re-read it (As I have a goal to read all of Austen's books this spring, even the dreaded ones!) and was again delightfull surprised. I havn't read it since I wrote practically a masters thesis on it (ha) back during my senior year of college, but after a sereration found myself just in love with it as ever. Definately the best of Austen's works by far. She truly is able to capture the humour each one of us has in our uniquely annoying selves, and is also able to graciously highlight our weaknesses. Always a good book to read and re-read....less

I read this book all the time to my kids. My parents read it to me as a child, and I just love it. It is so simple yet seems to intrigue the little ones! They love to look around the room, seeing the mouse on each page, the kittens and mittens, and of course, that red balloon! It is just a great way for them to realize that life can be fascinating if they just stop and look around them. ...less
