Author Neil Gaiman fascinates me. Stephen King supposedly wrote of him, "He is a treasure-house of story, and we are lucky to have him." I couldn't agree more. I love reading his work and definitely hope to share conversation with him over a pint at some obscure pub somewhere someday when it's raining. In my mind, it would be apropos if it were raining. The man seemingly knows everything about everything and incorporates all of it into his work; who wouldn't choose him to talk to if they had the chance?
Smoke and Mirrors is a piercingly creative collection of work that tantalizes the reader throughout. A few of my particular favorites are:
--Chivalry, a tale of one woman's holy grail thrift store find and what she does with it;
--Troll Bridge, a dark and sad tale of the troll in each of us;
--The Goldfish Pool and Other Stories, a ride through Hollywood with blinders off;
--One Life, Furnished in Early Moorcock, a bittersweet look back at childhood; and
--Murder Mysteries, an intriguing detective story as only Gaiman could write, brimming with brilliance and masterful storytelling.
Collections, in this case short fictions and illusions, are difficult to describe for me as every story and piece has its own rhythm and pace, its own voice and vision. Smoke and Mirrors is like the treat bag on Halloween, each individually wrapped candy an exquisite and mouth-watering piece to savor, but when you're done you get to eat another that promises to be just as good or possibly better.
