I didn't read the book, but listened to the abridged version on audio. I started to read the book, but 100 pages into it wasn't enjoying it. I wanted to give it my best effort because I wanted to be able to discuss it with my book club and now I know the main story and not so much of the details, but I'm ok with that because I didn't want to have the graphic details of some of the events etched in my head for the longterm. A sampling was enough for me to take from this book. ...less

I can relate to the esteem issues she faced and how having just one comment at an early age affect the way you feel about your self-image and weight in particular the rest of your life. I'm glad to see that she found the strength to leave a relationship and begin a journey of better health and more respect and love for herself. I'd really love to get her son's perspective on all of this as the photos in the book lead me to believe that he has some of his own issues that he's not been able to deal with well during the course of his parent's marriage (or more likely their separation and divorce). I appreciated her honesty and was shocked at some of the thoughts she verbalized to her husband during some of the rockier parts of their marriage - I can understand feeling that way, but to say what she said - oh my gosh! The flow of the book was very chatty and therefore made a quick read. Wishing her all the best with her new love, Tom....less

This really is about making peace with your things and understanding the psychology behind why these things are cluttering up your life (at least by your perception). I found it helpful because it wasn't a cookie-cutter solution of how to organize, but looked at the root of the problem which is more important for me to understand so that the organizational system that is put in place can be MAINTAINED. That's why it's critical to understand one's own personal reasons behind the clutter so those can be addressed....less

Because this book contained story after story of relationship, by midpoint, it was very boring to me. It didn't offer many solutions, though there were a few examples of successful relationships between adult children and their elders. The successes seemed to be when the parent treated the grown child as an adult and respected boundaries and decisions made by the adult child, allowing them to have control of their own life. It did make me realize how distance is such a powerful tool of control that the adult children may choose to use in order to establish the appropriate boundaries - though sometimes the reaction to this was not always positive for the relationship between that child and his/her parent. Bottom line though, respect and good communication is important in any relationship to make it work....less
